After Red was discharged from the Marine Corps on Sept 1, 1963, he went to work for his brother-in-law in Des Moines who was a concrete contractor. It was there he learned to finish concrete. Red and Marilyn were married in 1964. Marilyn was living in Ames and working for the Iowa State Highway Commission. A few weeks after their marriage, Red applied and was hired by H & F Builders in Ames. After a few years he was named their concrete foreman. On February 1, 1971 Red and Marilyn started in business for themselves. By this time they had two little boys (David and Timothy) and Mark was on the way. They lived on Crawford Ave at this time with the garage being their shop and Marilyn answering the phone and doing the bookkeeping in their home.
Several years later they decided to enlarge their business by doing poured walls. Their first set of wall forms were used forms that they purchased from Story Construction. Then they decided to expand further and do stamped and colored concrete. They had the office in their home for many years, but as the company grew they felt they needed to move the office out of the home. They started with a small shop but as the business grew they have moved several times to bigger places to accommodate the trucks and equipment. Our shop and office are now located at 401 N Bell in Ames.
Another son (Thomas) was born in 1976. The four sons all worked for Stenberg Concrete Construction while in high school and when they were home from college during the summer. David and Mark are now both employed by Stenberg Concrete with David being the President of the company and Mark, the Office Manager and Construction Superintendant.
